The Magic of Community

By Tony Passino, July 10, 2023

National Climate Fellow Tony Passino continues his hike on the Appalachian Trail! Where can you find community as an environmental changemaker? Tony says, everywhere!

It is day 14 on the Appalachian Trail and I am back in my tent with Olivia. Our feet are sore and our hearts (and stomachs) are full. Today was a good day filled with some “trail magic”. A couple of former hikers set up shop at a park and were making lunch for hikers. We caught them at the perfect time and enjoyed a warm lunch with a group of smiling faces.

The trail is special for many reasons. It allows you to learn about yourself and the world. It teaches you to appreciate clean water and it shows you the value of dry socks. Above all, it allows you to connect with nature and with others.

Community is important, both on the trail and off. When it comes to being a changemaker, community is essential. When we connect with others who share our values, we build our power. When we build our power, we can become a force for positive change in the world.

Finding community can be tough. It often requires that you step outside of your comfort zone to meet new people. The good news is: there are a multitude of different communities within the climate movement and most of us are looking to make new friends and build community so that we can make the world a better place. Will you join us? We dont bite, but the mosquitoes outside my tent certainly do.
